A Kiddush Hashem at Her Majesty’s Pleasure
Lord (Jeffrey) Archer has recently published a diary of his initial weeks of imprisonment at Belmarsh.
There is an interesting record of his conversation with the prison chaplain about the makeup of religious denominations within the prison population. The chaplain tells Archer that there are over a hundred Muslims, another hundred Roman Catholics but that the majority of the inmates are Church of England.
“What about the Jews?” asks Archer.
The chaplain replies: “Only one or two that I know of. Their family upbringing and sense of community is so strong that they rarely end up in the courts or prison”.
